Gemini App exceeded 750 million monthly active users by February 2026, ChatGPT serves over 700 million weekly users, and Perplexity is already building a search infrastructure for 200 million daily queries.

In practice, this means a simple thing: you now need to compete not only for search rankings, but also for the right to be selected by a neural network as a source, phrase, or brand to mention in a response.

Classical SEO hasn’t disappeared. But it’s no longer sufficient if a business’s goal isn’t simply to increase visibility but to maintain contact with its audience. Bain also estimates a 15-25% decline in organic traffic for brands. Data from Datos and SparkToro shows the same trend: in the US, the share of Google users who clicked on organic results fell from 44.2% to 40.3% over the year, while the share of zero-click scenarios increased from 24.4% to 27.2%.

It’s important not to go to extremes, however. Google, for its part, claims that it continues to send billions of clicks to websites per day and that AI-powered search features drive higher-quality conversions for complex and insightful queries. So the question isn’t whether SEO is dead. The question is whether SEO alone can solve the same problem it once did. And here the answer is no.

In practice, the working strategy looks like this: SEO is responsible for indexability, technical foundation, reach, and search presence. AEO increases the chance of ranking in a short, ready-made answer. GEO ensures that your brand, your wording, and your pages appear in generative search results. Not instead of SEO, but on top of it.

  • Guest posting on external platforms;
  • Constant brand visibility.

If you have an article on end-to-end analytics for 2023, and a competitor’s similar material was updated in 2026 and supplemented with new integrations, market changes, and practical cases, AI will almost always choose the more recent and relevant source.

Neural networks work better with what can be extracted from the text without guesswork. Therefore, phrases like “convenient service,” “high speed,” “affordable price,” and “good analytics” are of little use. Measurable characteristics are much more powerful. For example:

  • not “fast delivery,” but “delivery in Moscow in 2 hours”;
  • not “clear interface,” but “new users complete onboarding in 7 minutes”;
  • not “high advertising effectiveness,” but “CPA decreased by 18%, and ROAS increased from 320% to 410%.”

This type of presentation is convenient for a neural network: the numbers can be extracted, compared, integrated into a summary, and used in argumentation.

For GEO to work, it needs to be implemented as a process, not a set of chaotic actions.

Stage 1. Audit

First, you need to understand how AI already sees your brand.

Collect 20-30 real questions customers ask:

  • how to choose a product;
  • what are your comparisons;
  • what criteria do they use to make a decision;
  • what doubts arise before purchasing.

Check these queries in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Yandex, and Google.

Record:

  • is your brand mentioned;
  • in what context;
  • what sources are used;
  • who are the neural networks showing instead of you.

Next, look at your competitors. Which platforms are citing them? What wording is repeated? What entities and triplets have they secured for themselves? This helps you understand what knowledge already exists about the niche and what your brand lacks.

Content for GEO is best developed in clusters. Don’t write one article at a time on random topics, but rather organize thematic blocks around a single key area.

A good starting point is 20 to 30 articles within a single topic.

In each article, it’s useful to:

  • Use key entities;
  • Repeat important triplets;
  • Add tables, lists, and FAQs;
  • Provide numbers, restrictions, and conditions;
  • Indicate the author and sources.

Particular attention should be paid to updating old materials. This often yields the fastest results.

What should be updated:

  • Publication date;
  • Numbers and examples;
  • Structure;
  • FAQ section;
  • Author information;
  • Source links.

Stage 4. Monitoring

Working with AI search requires regular results monitoring.

Track:

  • Which queries you’ve started appearing for in AI responses;
  • Which pages are most frequently cited;
  • Which formats are performing best;
  • Which external platforms are starting to generate mentions;
  • How your brand presence is changing.

If neural networks are picking up cases more often, strengthen them. If your FAQ is performing well, develop your FAQ. If your brand isn’t appearing at all despite a good website, the problem is usually threefold: weak essential clarity, insufficient external presence, or a lack of consistent product messaging.

What’s important to understand now

The main change is that the website is no longer the only point of contact with the user. First, the user might see a brief AI response, then a comparison, then a recommendation, and only then might they click through to the source. This means that the battle is no longer just for clicks, but also for the mention itself.

In this environment, the winners will not be those who simply publish more text, but those who:

  • describe themselves more clearly as an entity;
  • back up their expertise with facts;
  • work both with the website and external platforms;
  • build content around consistent themes and phrases;
  • systematically update brand awareness in the digital environment.

It makes sense to begin GEO optimization as early as possible. Competition here is still lower than in traditional SEO, and established brand mentions and consistent phrases can be leveraged by AI systems for a long time. The more consistently and reliably a company has an online presence, the higher the likelihood that it will appear in responses from Gemini, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and other neural networks.
